Mission and Ministries
Throughout each year, Calvary participates in many mission projects that impact people from the local area to the international level, and we welcome your participation on any or all of our missional outreaches. Please check this page for updates on our missions and projects.
Free English Tutoring for Adults
An important mission at Calvary is its free English tutoring program for adults who are learning to speak, or desire to improve their ability to write or speak, English. We work with people of all educational levels and backgrounds. Calvary trains volunteers from the church and surrounding community who meet in small group or individual settings to teach English to individuals from around the world and all walks of faith. Tutors assist with obtaining citizenship, driver's licenses, apartments, and jobs, changing forever the lives of those we serve.
If you are interested in this program, here are two ways you can participate:
1. Become a tutor: Calvary trains tutors and provides them with resources to teach. No teaching experience is needed to become a tutor and training takes less than eight hours. Tutors then met with students at a mutually convenient time in a public place, often at our church, one to two hours per week. This is a way to show God's love to those in need in a way that fits your current schedule.
2. Assist a person who wants to learn English in contacting us: If you or someone you know wants to learn or improve their English, please contact Rita Pickett at 786-1858 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Volunteers in Mission (VIM)
Volunteers in Mission is a grassroots, volunteer-driven, missionary movement which uses building skills to assist communities where help is needed and invited. Teams are often assembled from members of many congregations, and are supported by a local host group where the help is being given. With the assistance of experienced team members, volunteers grow spiritually and learn new skills while helping others. Calvary teams have participated in week-long trips to Mississippi and Iowa, many day trips to Middleburgh, NY to assist in the cleanup and rebuilding of areas affected by Hurricane Irene, and, most recently, a mission trip to Cuba in 2019.
Calvary helps run a Vacation Bible School each summer for our sister church in Akwesasne, NY.
Each December Calvary performs a Living Nativity Scene, complete with a stable, animals, and actors, led by King's Kids, our youth drama group. Tour guides lead guests through the story of Jesus' birth, which is told through a combination of skits and song.
Partnership with the St. Ambrose Food Pantry
Each Sunday, during our worship service, any member of the congregation may bring non-perishable food items which are collected during the children’s time and taken to the pantry after the service. In 2017, over 1,300 items were delivered.
Capital City Rescue Mission
Calvary has a long standing commitment to serve dinner @ The Capital City Rescue Mission, serving on the 3rd Monday of odd months of the year. A carpool is available from the church, leaving at 5:45 pm and returning by about 7:15 pm. For information, please contact email@example.com .
UMW Rummage Sale
We also have specially scheduled drives for items during the year (for example winter coats, socks, toiletries, etc.) The UMW will accept your serviceable clothing, linens and bedding for the rummage sales. The United Methodist Women’s (UMW) Rummage Sales are held each spring and fall and are open to the community for shopping. Proceeds support women’s and children’s ministries around the globe.
Items accepted: gently used clothing for men, women and children, small household items, (dishes, glasses, cookware, decorative items, small working appliances), gently used children’s toys, and jewelry. If you are not sure if an item may be donated, please call the church. No large items or electronics, please. Please note that items may only be dropped off the week of each rummage sale. Please contact the church office for dates, times and drop off. Please see the UMW page for more informatiom on mission work done by the UMW.
The Knitting Ministry at Calvary, through the love of God, reaches out to those in need of hope and healing with gifts of prayer shawls and lap robes. Our meetings promote spiritual growth and fellowship among those present in an atmosphere of caring and affirmation. All knitters and crocheters all welcome, including those who have been knitting for years and those who are new to the craft.
Rags to Riches Program
Please use the receptacle in the church foyer to drop off your un-useable tattered, torn, or stained clothing and linens. All you have to do is to keep a bag next to your current recyclables for your unwanted, no-longer-serviceable items made of textile material—tattered clothing, worn out curtains, linens, bedding, pillows, etc. When you come to church, bring your bag and place it in our collection box located in the foyer outside the Gathering Space. That’s all there is to it. We’ll be green and generous. This mission keeps textiles out of our landfills and supports Capital City Rescue Mission with on-going donations. The Rescue Mission gets $.17 a pound for textile materials they bundle up for recycling. Serviceable items are given to clients and third world missions and unserviceable items are bailed and sold to provide funds for Rescue Mission programs.
In 2017, 26 truckloads of rags and clothing have been delivered to the Capital City Rescue Mission. This contribution of rags and clothing has netted the Capital City Rescue Mission over $700.
